About the direction
Transnistria is a self-proclaimed breakaway republic that is not internationally recognized. Although officially part of Moldova, since 1990, Transnistria has operated with its own government, currency, and symbols while maintaining strong Soviet-era influences.
Visiting Transnistria is like stepping back in time, where Soviet architecture, propaganda symbols, and historical landmarks remain intact. This tour includes visits to two of the region’s most significant sites: Bender Fortress (Tighina) – a powerful medieval stronghold, and Tiraspol – the capital of Transnistria, where remnants of the Soviet Union are still visible in everyday life.
Bender Fortress (Tighina) – A Medieval Citadel Between Empires
Bender Fortress, located on the banks of the Dniester River, is one of the most well-preserved medieval fortresses in Eastern Europe. With a history spanning over 500 years, it has been a key military stronghold for various empires.
Originally built in the 15th century by Moldavian ruler Stephen the Great, the fortress was later expanded by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Throughout history, it played a crucial role in wars between the Ottomans and the Russian Empire.
One of the most famous events in its history was in 1709 when Swedish King Charles XII took refuge in Bender Fortress after his defeat at the Battle of Poltava. In 1812, the fortress came under Russian control and became an important military base.
Today, visitors can explore its massive stone walls, underground tunnels, and defensive bastions, all while learning about its tumultuous past.
Tiraspol – A City Frozen in Soviet Times
Tiraspol is the capital of Transnistria and the second-largest city in Moldova. Founded in 1792 by Russian general Alexander Suvorov, it was initially a military outpost but later became an industrial hub.
During the Soviet era, Tiraspol was an important industrial and political center, and today, remnants of the USSR are still evident. Lenin statues dominate city squares, the hammer-and-sickle symbol can be seen on government buildings, and the city’s wide boulevards reflect Soviet urban planning.
Key landmarks in Tiraspol include:
- Suvorov Square, the city’s central plaza with a monument to its founder, Alexander Suvorov.
- The 1992 War Memorial, commemorating those who died in the Transnistrian conflict.
- The Soviet T-34 Tank, a symbol of World War II victory and a reminder of the region’s Soviet past.
- The Transnistrian Parliament, one of the few government buildings in the world that still features a massive bust of Lenin.
Tiraspol is also known for having its own unrecognized currency – the Transnistrian ruble, making it one of the few places in the world with a completely independent monetary system.
